Y 21. pp 287-90 1840 Nov 7. MacGregor Laird to Colonel Nicholls R.M. asserting that it would be folly to send out the Expedition without accompanying it with the means to set up a trading venture because the natives would not understand what they were trying to accomplish with their treaties. He states that he is willing to meet William Forster to discuss the matter, or any others who thought of joining in such an enterprise. He adds estimates of the costs of trading ventures on the Niger for the interior trade and for the palm oil trade in the delta.
