Z 9. pp 443-46 1840 Sept 19. Josias Booker to Buxton in answer to his letter of the 15th (See Vol 19 p 396), mentioning letters he had received from W. E. Forster and Gurney Hoare. He states that he agrees with the latter and regrets that he had not seen him when he visited Liverpool as they could have made much progress by discussion. He outlines his scheme to send a vessel with £5,000 of goods, commanded by a seasoned Captain whom he knew, with a planter to seek a site for the model plantation. He was prepared to contribute half the amount and to guarantee other subscribers that they would not be called upon to contribute more than their original subscription, and to invite a young cotton, sugar and coffee planter trained by himself to go out with the ship. He suggests that one of the Society, fully empowered to act, should be sent to Liverpool and that he himself should do nothing until he heard from him. He states that if he had men to deal with such as Samuel Gurney they would make progress. (Copy).
