Z 12. pp 455-60 1840 Sept 25. Josias Booker to Samuel Gurney describing the vessel he contemplatedv for the voyage to Africa, vouching for the character of its captain who was part owner, claiming that cargo of from five to seven thousand pounds would suffice to exchange for palm oil. The usual length of voyage to the Bonny river and back was 7-9 months and the rate of hire in this case would be £330-50 a month. A surgeon and competent planter should accompany the vessel and a Government survey be procured, if possible, to assist them in getting from place to place, together with a statement from Lord John Russell on the protection to be granted by the Government. Booker suggests they should start their activities at Fernando Po, that white supervisors and black labourers should be obtained from British Guiana, together with plants and seeds. Regarding the farm he thought nothing could be worse than to attempt too much at first.
