Resumo

Close view of the richly-carved porch area. Described in E.D. Lyon, 'Notes to accompany a series of photographs designed to illustrate the ancient architecture of Western India' (Geneva, 1871), p. 15: 'Continuing to ascend a little further up the avenue, on the opposite side to the portico of Manet Jemalji will be found the temple known as 'Kumarapala's'. A tree blocks the entrance and prevents a good photograph being obtained of the whole, but if thehistory of Indian architecture be written in decadence, there can be little doubt that this is the oldest temple now standing, as it is certain nothing on the whole hill can compare in beauty of detail with the two carved pillars on either side the doorway. The date of its erection is not known and it is said to have been lately restored, and it is therefore to be hoped it may be spared the application of the plaster coating with which so many of the best specimens here are now being covered up.'. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David.
