Relief sculpture of three elephants supporting representations of multi-storeyed buildings. India Museum no. 1444. Received from Captain Lyon, 7 February 1871. 553. - As before stated there is a porch outside the cave, it is considerably wider than the body of the excavation being 55 ft. from side to side the ends being carved into different figures and animals as here shown, the principal of which as so often before seen in other temples are three elephants carved as only an Indian can carve that wisest of brutes, and here is repented over and over again carved in the stone, an exact copy of the entrance arch including also the wood framework, thus proving that this latter must have been part of the original design and placed in its present position at the time the cave was excavated. Here also is represented the Buddhist. stone rail, before alluded to in describing the topes, and on the right may be seen the plain stone octagon pillar and the mortices which supported the wooden gallery alluded to in describing view No. 552. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David.
