Photograph of Nawab Isa Khan's Tomb at Thatta in Sind, Pakistan, taken for the Archaeological Survey of India in the 1870s. Nawab 'Isa Khan Tarkhan was governor of Sind on behalf of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (r.1628-58). The Nawab died in 1644, aged 92 years old, and was buried in this tomb that he had built himself. The tomb is part of a necropolis which lies on the plateau of the Makli hills, a limestone outcrop to the west of Thatta. It is the most imposing structure on the hill and is designed in the tradition of Islamic funerary architecture. This elaborate tomb is built of buff-coloured Jandoti stone and stands in a courtyard surrounded by a high stone wall. The tomb is square in plan with two storeys and large central dome. All the pillars have four-sided shafts covered in a multiple scrolls design. There are ten graves in the centre of the building, each carved with inscriptions accompanied by floral and geometrical patterns. 17.8 x 21.9 Centimetres.
