Photograph of a close-up view of an inscription from the pedestal of a statue from Loriyan Tangai, taken by Alexander Caddy in 1896. This inscription is mentioned in the annual address of the 'Proceedings of the Asiatic Society of Bengal' of 1898 on page 60, 'In 1895, Mr A. Caddy, who had been deputed by the Government of Sir Charles Elliott on archaeological exploration, excavated a large statue of a standing Buddha at the Loriyan Tangai stupa, in the lower Swat valley, on the pedestal of which was found a short inscription in the Kharosthi characters, dated in the year 318.'.
