This photograph of the façade of a private house in Srigonda was taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s and is part of the Archaeological Survey of India Collections (Indian Museum Series). Srigonda is situated in the modern state of Maharashtra, 32 miles south of Ahmadnagar and in Ahmadnagar district. The town is best known for its Hindu temples which are typical of the area and are dedicated to a variety of deities including Shiva. Apart from the temple of Vithoba, these were in a poor state of preservation when Burgess visited. In the 'List of Antiquarian Remains in the Bombay Presidency', Burgess states that "Some very good wood-carving decorates the façades of two houses at Srigonda, of the style, though not so old, that is found in such abundance in North Gujarat". 241 x 288 Millimetres.
