Photograph of the baroda gate at Dabhoi in Gujarat, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Dabhoi is an ancient town that was fortified by the Solanki Rajputs in the 12th Century. The fort, an example of the Rajput military style, was built in the13th century by the Vaghela king of Patan, or Anhilvada. It was constructed on a plan which follows the shastric traditions described in the Vastu scriptures incorporating four gates in each of the cardinal directions. The Baroda Gate, which stands at over nine metres tall, is the best preserved. Some of the brackets supporting the architraves have been substituted by Islamic arches. The brackets are carved with musicians, warriors, dancers and mythical beasts and the pilasters depict the incarnations of Vishnu. 260 x 194 Millimetres. Photographer: Cousens, Henry.
