Photograph of the sculpture on the façade of the south-east elevation of the Gudha Mandapa of the Surya Temple at Modhera, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s.This temple, which represents the grandest achievement of the Solanki period in Gujarat, was built in 1027 and although in ruinous condition it still reflects its former splendour. Since this photograph was taken, the temple has been much restored. The sanctuary has a closed adjoining hall (gudha mandapa) and an open pillared portico (sabha mandapa) all are aligned to the east and built on a stepped plan. The lower portion of both structures is elaborately carved with friezes of elephants, horses and the upper wall portions have panels with many images of the divinities. The of the sun god Agni, on the south, is one of the best preserved. The porch, at the east end of the mandapa, can be seen in the background. 264 x 209 Millimetres. Photographer: Cousens, Henry.
