Photograph of Jain temples and Ra Khengar's Palace on Mount Girnar near Junagadh in Gujarat, taken by the travelling commercial photographer F. Nelson in the 1890s from the Lee-Warner Collection: 'Photographs of Junagadh'. Mount Girnar lies three kilometres (two miles) east of Junagadh and is the highest point on the Saurashtra peninsula. It has been an important pilgrimage site since the 3rd century BC, being particularly sacred to the Jains. Along the principal path leading to the central peak there are gateways, tanks, and shrines including a complex of sixteen Jain temples dedicated to Neminatha, built in the 12th and 13th centuries during the Solanki period and in later centuries. The palace, probably built by a king of the Chudasama Dynasty, forms part of the complex. This view shows the palace in the foreground, with the elongated temple domes beyond and Mount Girnar rising up behind. 23.9 x 29.65 Centimetres. Photographer: Nelson, F.
