Resumo

Photograph of the Sasivakallu Ganesha, a monolithic statue of Ganesha on the road to Hampi, Vijayanagara, taken by Thomas Biggs in 1855, from the collection of 'Photographs of views of temples &c in the South Mahratta country. Presented by H. Newton Esq. 23/4/72'. The statue of a seated Ganesha in this view, known as the Sasivakallu Ganesha, is 2.4 metres high and has been carved in a monolithic boulder. It is installed in an open-pillared mandapa near a plain shrine south-east of Hemakuta Hill. The elephant god is represented with ornaments and a serpent tied as a belt around his full belly. Further to the south there is a slightly smaller statue, the Kadalekalu Ganesha, in an open-pillared shrine. Albumen print. Photographer: Biggs, Thomas.
