Resumo

General view looking towards rock outcrop dotted with cave temples. On the summit of the rocks stands the Olakkanatha Temple, with the entrance to the Mahishamardini Cave directly beneath. Another copy of this print at Photo 1000 (3084). Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph: 436 - Continuing along the same path, it almost immediately descends to the level ground below, and proceeding towards the place where the tents are pitched under the trees, there is a tank of cut stone, from whence the next view is taken. It gives an excellent idea of the low range of rocks which we have been exploring. The small structure on top appears to have been intended as a base for a small pyramidal tower, and immediately under this is seen the entrance to the cave last visited, and described under 434 and 435. The cave seen underneath is simply hollowed out, but without any carvings, never having been completed. Photographer: Lyon, Edmund David.
