Photograph of the Taj Mahal at Agra from the 'Strachey Collection of Indian Views', taken by Shepherd and Roberston in 1862. The Taj Mahal was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite wife Arjumand Banu Begum. Upon her death in 1631 the whole kingdom mourned and Shah Jahan was inconsolable, his hair turning prematurely grey overnight. Built of India's finest marble, quarried at Makrana near Jodhpur, the colour of the Taj changes according to different light conditions. It took 12 years to build involving 20,000 craftsmen from all over Asia and thousands of precious and semi-precious stones imported from distant lands. It is alleged that Shah Jahan also intended to construct a black tomb for himself on the opposite bank of the Jumna. Photographer: Shepherd and Robertson.
