Panoramic view, composed of two prints, of the Banyan tree in the Botanical Gardens at Sibpur near Calcutta, from the Fiebig Collection: Views in Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. The Botanical Gardens in Sibpur, on the west bank of the river Hooghly, were set up by the East India Company in 1786, through the efforts of Colonel Robert Kyd, its first Superintendent. The objective was to collect plants indigenous to the country and for introduction and acclimatisation of plants from foreign parts. The Banyan tree within the gardens is now 200 years old and is said to be the largest in the world, covering an area of about 381m. Photographer: Fiebig, Frederick.
