A photograph of a view of Papanasham falls, Tamilnadu from the 'Vibart Collection of Views in South India' taken by an unknown photographer about 1855.The Tambraparni River is famous for its several waterfalls, carrying water which allegedly has medicinal values. It rises in the Western Ghats and flows eastwards through the centre of the Tirunelveli district to the sea at Kolkai. Papanasam means 'absolution of sin' and the waterfall is an important pilgrimage spot as people who bathe here are supposedly cleansed of sin.
