Photograph of the Vishvanatha Kunda Ellora, taken by J. Johnston in the 1860s, from the Allardyce Collection: Album of views and portraits in Berar and Hyderabad, taken by J. Johnston in the 1860s.This well is also known as Brahma Kunda or Astha Tirtha because it is believed that eight heavenly river flow into the basin. The kunda has a high berm wall and elaborately decorated octagonal platforms in the corners and is accessed through steps in the centre of the four sides. Four tiers of parallel steps lead to the water basin at the bottom which is surrounded by eight small shrines. 18.9 x 24.4 Centimetres. Photographer: Johnston, J.
