Resumo

Photograph of the Bassein (Pathein) River with the Chief Commissioner's steamer 'Irrawaddy' in Burma (Myanmar), taken by an unknown photographer in about 1880. The Bassein River is the most westerly branch of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River in the delta region of Burma, and enters the Andaman Sea near the port of Bassein. The river steamers of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company plied the sea route between Rangoon and Bassein. The Bassein district became part of British Burma in 1852, and the steamer was an official government vessel used by the Chief Commissioner of Burma between 1882-1887, Charles Umpherston Aitchison. It is thought that the album containing this image was compiled by him. 12.5 x 21.3 Centimetres.
