Photograph of the Kishan Bhavan at Dig, Rajasthan, taken by the studio of Priyalall & Company in c.1900. The Kishan Bhavan is one of four main pavilions in the 18th-century garden palace of the Jats of Bharatpur at Dig, built by Suraj Mal (r.1733-63). The pavilions stand at the edge of a square formal garden laid out in the Persian-Mughal tradition of the char bagh, flanked by two large reservoirs or tanks. The garden is divided into four parterres by water channels filled with fountains running from each of the pavilions to an octagonal pool in the centre. The Kishan Bhavan (c.1760) is set back on a terrace at the southern edge of the garden, with a baradari on its roof. This view from an adjoining building looks across the garden towards the pavilion with the curved bangla roofs of the Purana Mahal or Old Palace in the distance. The album of 'Views in the Bharatpur State and Neighbourhod' was presented to the India Office by the Festival of Empire in 1912, held in 1911 at Crystal Palace in London to mark the coronation of George V (1865-1936). The Maharaja of Bharatpur was among the exhibitors in the Indian Section of the Imperial Exhibition held as part of the Festival. 21 x 28.1 Centimetres. Photographer: Priyalall and Company.
