Resumo

This photograph was taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s to form part of an album entitled 'Photographs of India and Overland Route'. It shows the Mermaid Gate at one end of the China Bazaar in the Kaiserbagh Palace Complex. It was built between 1848 and 1850 for Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (reigned 1847-56) who intended it to be the eighth wonder of the world. It consisted of an immense courtyard surrounded by living quarters, royal mansions, baradaris and cupolas. It was largely destroyed by the British during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58. Photographer: Bourne, Samuel.
