Resumo
Photograph of a sculptured figure in the courtyard of Cave XXXII (Indra Sabha), at Ellora in Maharashtra, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1870s. The spectacular site of Ellora has a group of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cave temples excavated into the face of a basalt cliff. Indra Sabha is the largest of the Jain series carried out under Rashtrakuta patronage in the 9th century. A simple gateway leads to a courtyard which contains a monolithic shrine with a pyramidal roof. The interior of this double storey cave has a columned mandapa or hall with niches on three sides and a sanctuary in the middle of the back wall. This view shows a carved figure of the god Indra seated on his elephant Airavata. 19.6 x 15.2 Centimetres. Photographer: Cousens, Henry.
