Resumo
Photograph of the Hall of Sacrifice in the Kailasa Cave Temple (Cave XVI) at Ellora, taken by D.H. Sykes in the 1870s. The site of Ellora has a series of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cave temples excavated into the rocky façade of a cliff of basalt. The Kailasa is the most noted of all the splendours of Ellora; a free-standing temple rather than a cave, entirely sculpted out of a great mass of basalt. Patronized by different rulers of the Rashtrakuta dynasty from the mid-8th century, it symbolizes Mount Kailasa, abode of Shiva. The so-called Hall of Sacrifice is situated on the south side of the court. This view shows the large sculptures of Durga, Chamunda and Kali situated on the right wall and the seven matrikas with Ganesha and Parvati on the rear wall. 20.2 x 26.6 Centimetres. Photographer: Sykes, D.H.
