Resumo
Photograph of the Scales of Justice Screen in the Khas Mahal of the Red Fort at Delhi, taken by Lala Deen Dayal in the 1890s, from the Curzon Collection: 'Views of places proposed to be visited by Their Excellencies Lord & Lady Curzon during Autumn Tour 1902'. The Red Fort or Lal Qila was built in the 1640s by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (r.1628-1658) as the palace citadel for his new capital city, Shajahanabad. The palace consists of a series of pavilions along the eastern edge of the fort overlooking the Yamuna river. The Khas Mahal contained the private chambers of the emperor. This interior view shows a wall richly decorated with inlaid floral pietra dura work and inset with a pierced marble screen. The semi-circular panel of the screen depicts a crescent moon, stars and the scales of justice, the latter used as a regal emblem. The lower section is carved in a floral and lattice work design. The screen is suspended over the central water channel known as the Nahr-i-Behisht or "Stream of Paradise" that passes in a straight line through the palace apartments. 20.3 x 28.1 Centimetres. Photographer: Deen Dayal, Lala.
