Photograph of a river and temple at Somnath in Gujarat, taken in c.1900 by an unknown photographer, possibly the Solankee Studio, Rajkot. Somnath is situated on the west coast of Saurashtra overlooking the Arabian Sea 6 km (four miles) east of Veraval. Also known as Prabhas Patan, it is a famous centre of Hindu pilgrimage. It is one of the twelve sites of Shiva's Jyotirlinga or manifestation and has a great Shiva temple of legendary origins, the Somanatha Temple. The nearby confluence of three rivers, the Saraswati, Hiran and Kapil, is also considered holy. The photograph is from the Curzon Collection: 'Presented with feelings of friendship and sincere admiration to Lord Curzon of Kedleston, Viceroy and Governor-General of India, by H.H. Rasulkhanji, Navab Junagadha 1900.' Lord Curzon served as Viceroy of India between 1899 and 1905 and visited Junagadh in November 1900. Photographer: Solankee Studio.
