Photograph from the Curzon Collection: 'Visit of His Excellency the Viceroy. Kotah, November, 1902' of a street scene in the bazaar at Kota, Rajasthan, taken by P.A. Herzog and P. Higgins in 1902. Kota was founded in the 14th century within the borders of the state of Bundi, but became the capital of an independent princely state in 1625. This view records a perspective down a street lined with open-fronted shops. The town houses are built with projecting enclosed balconies or jarokhas, deep cornices, and awnings at the shop entrances casting heavy shade. Photographer: Herzog and Higgins.
