Resumo

Photograph of a Buddhist cave shrine near Moulmein (Mawlamyaing) in Burma (Myanmar), taken by Bourne and Shepherd in the 1870s. Such caves like the Farm Caves (Ka-yon or Payon Caves) are situated in the limestone hills that rise from the plains to the east of Moulmein, and were used as Buddhist cave temples. The rock surfaces, stalagmites and stalactites of the cave's interior are carved and decorated with religious imagery including stupas and many images of the Buddha which stand on the bedrock of the cave floor. Rock-cut temples and cave shrines such as this are found in both Buddhist and Hindu art. 22.1 x 28.5 Centimetres. Photographer: Bourne and Shepherd.
