Resumo
An albumen print taken by Richard Banner Oakeley, showing Vishnu in his incarnation as Varaha the Boar, sculpted from chloritic schist at Halebid in Karnataka. Halebid (ancient Dwarasamudra), a site in the Hassan district, was once the capital of the Hoysala dynasty (1000-1346 AD), which ruled the southern Deccan. The Hoysalas moved their capital from Belur to Halebid and embellished it with temples, which are considered masterpieces of Hindu architecture. The city declined after being pillaged by invaders from the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century. Photographer: Oakeley, Richard Banner.
