Photograph from an album of 80 albumen prints taken by Eugene Clutterbuck Impey, giving a view of the Taj from the river. The Taj Mahal was built on the banks of the river Yamuna in Agra by the Emperor Shah Jahan (ruled 1628-58) as a tomb for his favourite wife Arjumand Banu Begum. Constructed over a period of 12 years and involving the work of many thousands of skilled artisans, the Taj is the culmination of the evolution of Mughal architecture. Variously described as 'the most graceful and the most impressive of the sepulchres of the world', 'a dream in marble', 'a poem in marble', 'a teardrop on the cheek of time', the Taj reflects a variety of tints and tones according to changes in light. The white marble tomb is set on a terrace and fronted with a large garden riven with marble water channels. The whole complex is surrounded with a red sandstone wall in which are set gateways and pavilions. Photographer: Impey, Eugene Clutterbuck.
