Photograph of the carvings on the Jarai-ki-Math Temple at Pathera, near Barwa Sagar in Uttar Pradesh, taken by an unknown photographer around the 1890s.The Jarai-ki-Math Temple is situated on a rocky hill and was constructed in the ninth century, during the Pratihara period. It consists of a rectangular sanctuary preceded by a vestibule with an elaborate doorway. The structure stands on a platform surmounted by wall mouldings, which have a sculptured niche on each projection with figures of gods, nymphs and amorous couples. In the corner niches there are figures of gods, nymphs and amorous couples. The shikara or tower is covered by a motif of gavaksha-arches. A large projecting niche-shrine with a miniature doorway and porch adorns the wall. The temple contains an image depicting Shiva and Parvati and an inscribed image of Durga. Photographer: Unknown.
