This view of the Kolhapur Infantry was taken in 1894 by an unknown photographer on the occasion of the installation of His Highness the Maharaja of Kolhapur, Shahu Chhatrapati (1875-1922). Kolhapur, situated on the banks of the river Panchaganga was the capital city of the former princely state of the same name in Maharashtra. In 1675 it was conquered by the Maratha chief Shivaji, the British obtained political suzerainty of Kolhapur in 1844. Shahu Chhatrapati, the Maharaja of Kolhapur maintained a military force of 255 cavalry, 1902 infantry, and 67 guns and was entitled to a 19 gun salute. 22 x 29.4 Centimetres. Photographer: Unknown.
