This panoramic view in two parts showing the army's camping ground, was taken on the occasion of the installation the Maharaja of Kolhapur, Shahu Chhatrapati (1875-1922) in 1894. Kolhapur, situated on the banks of the river Panchaganga was the capital city of the princely state of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, south west India. The city has been subject to many different rulers over the years; between the 10th and 13th centuries it was ruled by the Yadavas; later it came under Mughal control, and in 1675 it was conquered by the Maratha chief Shivaji and then ruled by the dynasty founded by his younger son.
