A Daguerreotype by Lorenzo Suscipi of the Piazza del Popolo, a Popular Meeting Place and Entry Point into Rome. The Two, Almost Twin, Churches of Santa Maria Di Montesanto and Santa Maria Dei Miracoli Stand in the Background, Either Side of an Egyptian Obelisk. Dedicated to the Pharaoh Rameses II (1304-1237 BC) It Was Placed in the Square in 1589 after Having Originally Been Brought to Rome and Placed in the Circus Maximus. Photographer Alexander Ellis Planned to Produce a Book, 'Italy Daguerreotyped', Containing His Own Photographs and Those of Suscipi and Achille Morelli, but the Project Was Never Realised.
