The "Oiran" Was a Courtesan in the Edo Period. Formerly the Term Was Applied Only to High-Ranking Courtesans, but Later It Became a General Term for All Prostitutes. This Photograph Depicts the Former. The Dress She Wears Is a Parade of Luxurious Items Such as Saya-Silk Twill, Crepe, Habutae-Silk, Rasha-Thin Silk, Velvet, and Gold-Brocaded Satin Damask.
