Resumo
Photograph of the stone 'Ratha' or temple car in the Vitthala Temple Complex at Vijayanagara, taken by Alexander Rea around 1892. This view shows the small Garuda shrine constructed to resemble a stone chariot, with stone wheels imitating those of an actual chariot used in temple ceremonies, built in front of the main temple in the Vitthala Temple complex. It faces west towards the Vishnu temple. Garuda is the mount of Vishnu and is placed facing the deity figure placed within the shrine. The chariot has a brick and plaster tower covered by a hemispherical roof. The Vitthala Temple is one of the greatest monuments of the Vijayanagara period and dates to the sixteenth century. The complex is set inside a rectangular court. The principal feature of the temple is the open mandapa or hall with massive granite piers fashioned in clusters of colonnettes and as rearing animals and riders with composite brackets. The moulded basement is adorned with friezes of lions, elephants and horses and the access steps are flanked by elephants. Photographer: Rea, Alexander.
