Resumo
Photograph of the Garuda Pillar at Jajpur, Cuttack District, taken by William Henry Cornish around 1870. This monolithic pillar stands twenty two feet high and was originally supposed to have been topped with an image of Garuda. M. H. H. Kuraishi in his 'List of ancient monuments.in the Province of Bihar and Orissa' of 1931, argued against there ever having been a Garuda image on top of the pillar, "The legend is that Kala-pahar, general of Sulaiman Kararani the Afghan king of Bengal, after his conquest of Jajpur made a vain attempt to pull down the column by means of chains and teams of elephants; but succeding only in removing the Garuda capital (from the top of the column) which is said to be now preserved in a small temple about half a mile from the pillar. This legend, however, does not bear criticism." The pillar was probably part of a large temple which is now in a ruined condition. Photographer: Cornish, William Henry.
