Resumo

Photograph of a statue of Avalokiteshvara, Udayagiri Hills, Cuttack in Orissa, taken by William Henry Cornish around 1870, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. This is a large image of Avalokiteshvara, the compassionate Bodhisattva, cut in high relief on a slab of chlorite. He holds a large lotus in his left hand and his ears, arms, waist and breast are decorated with ornaments. In the 'Memoirs of the Archaeological Survey of India No. 44, Exploration in Orissa' of 1930, Ramprasada Chanda wrote, In the middle of the plain enclosed in the bay, on a low mound of debris, stands a two-armed image of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (7' 10"by 2' 10") with the Dhyani Buddha Amitabha seated in meditation in the head-dress. On the back of the slab the name of the donor is inscribed in characters of the seventh or eighth century A.D. Photographer: Cornish, William Henry.
