General view looking towards the Emperor Akbar's palace-city complex at Fatehpur Sikri, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections, photographed by Edmund William Smith in 1893. The palace complex of Fatehpur Sikri, built by the Emperor Akbar (r.1556-1605) between 1571 and 1585. This is a distance view of the complex with the Hiran Minar (Elephant Tower) in the foreground, on the left, and the Baths and the Mint beyond; in the centre is the Hathi Pol (Elephant Gate). The Hiran Minar is a minaret with spiked stone projections in the form of elephant tusks. It is considered to be a hunting tower but was probably a milestone from which distances could be calculated.
