Resumo
Photograph of a Karen village at Taungoo, taken by J. Jackson in c.1868, part of an album of 43 views of Burma (Myanmar) from the Sladen Collection. This is a general view of two rows of thatched houses raised on stilts, with figures at work in the field in the foreground. The Karen are one of the ethnic groups of Burma, others being the Shan, Mon, Kayah, Chin, Kachin and Rakhaing along with the majority Bamar. They live throughout central and southern Burma, and in the 19th century formed the chief population of the south-west section of the Shan States and of Karen-ni. The town of Taungoo is situated towards the northern end of the Bago Division in central Burma and was once a powerful kingdom in the 15th and 16th centuries. Albumen print. Photographer: Jackson, J.
