Photograph of a view of a garden at Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, taken by T. Murray in the 1870's. The State of Rampur was founded in the late 17th century by Shah Alam and Hussain Khan, two members of a war-like tribe from Afghanistan called the Rohillas, who had been given leave by the Mughals to pacify the area, which then became known as Rohilkhand. When most of the Rohillas were driven out in 1774, in the Rohilla War, their only remaining chieftain became Nawab of Rampur. In 1857 the Nawab was given land and titles as a reward for his loyalty to the British. The Fort and Palace complex in the city were later remodelled and rebuilt in the Indo-Saracenic style, by W.C. Wright, the chief Engineer, at the instigation of Nawab Hamid Ali Khan, after his ascension to the throne in 1896. Photographer: Murray, T.
