Portrait of Sivaji Chhatrapati, Maharaja of Kolhapur (1863-1883) from the 'Album of cartes de visite portraits of Indian rulers and notables' by Bourne and Shepherd, early 1870s. The Maharajas of Kolhapur were descended from the younger son of Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha empire. In 1870 Sivaji Maharaja Chhatrapati succeeded Raja Ram by adoption. Sivaji Maharaja Chhatrapati was made a Knight of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India. He became insane and the government appointed a Regent in 1882 to take over. Sivaji Chattrapati died in 1883 and was succeeded by Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaja. 8.3 x 5 Centimetres. Photographer: Bourne and Shepherd.
