Resumo
Looking across open ground towards a European bungalow, probably in the cantonment, in Ambala, from the Elgin Collection: 'Spring Tours 1894-98'. This is a later print (1890s) of a Samuel Bourne photograph. Ambala was situated on the route from Delhi to Simla in northern India. In the 1880s there was a huge cantonment here covering over 78 square km (48 square miles), constructed from 1843 onwards in a classic example of colonial grid planning. Paget Park and the Maidan provided open spaces. The British built St. Paul's Church and a cemetery here. 22.2 x 29.1 Centimetres. Photographer: Bourne, Samuel.
