Resumo
Photograph of the Taj Mahal at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, taken by Herzog and Higgins in c.1895, from the Elgin Collection: 'Autumn Tour 1895'. This is a distant view of the palace with the city walls in the foreground. The capital of Madhya Pradesh Bhopal was founded in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty. By the 18th century, it was ruled by the descendants of the Afghan Dost Muhammad Khan. Bhopal was unique among the princely states as it was ruled by a succession of widows; Begum Shah-Jahan (1838-1901) succeeded as Nawab Begum twice; from 1844 to1860 and then from 1868 until 1901. Shah-Jahan Begum was responsible for the construction of the Taj Mahal and Bara Mahal palaces, and for other public work projects such as subsidising the cost of the railway between Hoshangabad and Bhopal. She also commenced the impressive Taj-ul-Masjid mosque, a large mosque with two colossal domed minarets. 13.2 x 28.3 Centimetres. Photographer: Herzog and Higgins.
