Resumo
View of the 'Cenotaph of 84 pillars' at Bundi taken by Gunpatrao Abajee Kale, c.1900. The photograph is from an album of views of Bundi formerly in the collection of Horatio Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and Broome, (1850-1916), who was Commander in Chief of India between 1902 and 1909. Bundi was the historical capital of the former princely state of the same name in Rajasthan. The ruling family of Bundi, the Hara Chauhan clan of Rajputs built a series of impressive palaces, gardens and tanks here which appear to have been carved out of the hillside in several tiers. The town is full of attractive garden pavilions, step well tanks, temples and chattris, or memorial pavilions. The architecture of Bundi is characterised by Rajput motifs such as lotus flower spandrels and elephant symbols. This view shows a memorial with 84 pillars in a single cenotaph along with a Shiva lingam. It was erected by Raja Anirudh (r.1682-1696) in memory of his foster brother, Deva. Built on a high platform this is a unique double story structure; the Shiva lingam at the centre makes it both a temple and a cenotaph. 23.7 x 28.9 Centimetres. Photographer: Kale, Gunpatrao Abajee.
