A photograph of a view of the Screw-Pile pier, Madras from the 'Vibart Collection of Views in South India' taken by an unknown photographer about 1855.The Screw Pile Pier is seen here under construction, circa 1860. It was designed by Alexander Mitchell (1780-1868) the inventor and patentee of the 'Mitchell Screwpile and mooring', a simple yet effective means of constructing durable lighthouses in deepwater, on mud-banks and shifting sands.
