Photograph of a royal banner in Savantvadi, Maharashtra, taken by an unknown photographer in 1877, part of the Bellew Collection of Architectural Views. The princely state of Savantvadi was founded in the 1620s by the Bhonsles, a ruling family of Goa who fled the Portuguese and set up residence further north along the Konkan coast. The town is about 64 kms from Panaji in Goa, en route to Bombay. Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India in 1877, and this event was ceremonially commemorated by the princes of India. At this time Savantvadi was ruled by the young Rajabahadur Raghunath Savant Bhonsle (r.1869-99). The photo shows his banner featuring rearing bears. Photographer: Unknown.
