ResumoThis paper presents an alternative to idlecomputational resources of universities, by building highperformanceclusters, based on the Linux operating system. We developed eight cluster configurations, where the mostinteresting was the use of a notebook as server, which allowsany researcher to the university to continue its researchactivities on any campus of the university. The remote serverdoes boot the nodes, computers, laboratories, withoutrequiring any special configuration, just the computer'sBIOS that will participate in the cluster should be set toallow boot from the network card. The most significantresult of processing was achieved with a weatherapplication that needs to be processed at seven o'clock in themorning and seven o'clock at night to generate theprediction of the next day, in university labs processing timewas reduced to forty minutes, using computers conventional.Index Terms ⎯ Clustering, High Performance, HighPerformance Computing, Parallel Processing, DistributedProcessing, Beowulf, OpenMosix, Distributed OperatingSystem, Cluster, MPI and PVM.
