ResumoThe present emphasis on environ m ntal preservation and human health is resulting in an increased use of chlorine for disinfection and waste treat ment. Few efforts, if any, are being made by those proposing such procedures to de termine the adverse impact of increased usage. Recent investigations, including life-cycle studies with aquatic organisms, have greatly clarified the level of signifi cance of chlorine toxicity. Several major projects in various stages of development or completion will add to this understanding, but sufficient data are available now to permit estimates of the maximum levels of residual chlorine that would protect aquatic life.
