ResumoPublisher Summary This chapter discusses the problems associated with the selection and preparation of a sample and describes the novel methods of analysis, the determination of individual sulfur functional groups, and the errors associated with various methods of analysis. The chapter discusses a few potential sources of error in sulfur analysis because of inadequate sampling and handling techniques. The presentation is informal and dwells on the major issues only. The chapter discusses sulfur in coal-derived materials (CDM). Processing of coal changes the chemical and physical structure of coal and often produces new structures that were not present in the original coal. The identity and the quantity of CDM will, therefore, depend on the structure of the original coal and on the processing conditions applied and their intensities.
