ResumoPublisher Summary The presence in urine of an activator substance capable of effecting the transformation of plasminogen to plasmin was first described by Williams and in the following year by Astrup and Sterndorff and Sobel et al. The latter group assigned the name urokinse to this activator. Bernik and Kwaan have shown that the activator produced in culture by embryonic kidney cells was immunologically identical to the urinary activator. Barlow and Lazer have studied other biochemical and physical parameters of the two activators and were unable to show any differences. The chapter discusses the Clot Lysis (Method of Plough) and Esterolytic Methods in a laboratory controlled test. It also details appropriate method for purification from either human urine or the culture harvest media. It lists the physical constants on urokinase and amino acid composition of urokinase: amino acid residues.
