ResumoIn the last of 70 years, the insecticides have been used in the control and combat of agricultural insects, supplying food to a rapid growth population. The pyrethroids appear at the beginning of 1980’s as an alternative of the higher toxicity insecticides. They have low acute toxicity to mammals, don’t accumulate in the fat tissues and are not persistent in the environment. They are also used for indoor pest control as well as in public health 347 programmes for the combat of disease-carrying insects. Because of their safety, the pyrethroids were widely used in agriculture and the presence of residues in the food can be a risk for the population after a long-time consumption. Thus, the determination of residues of pyrethroids in food commodities and in the environment has been demanded by the consumers, producers and sanitary authorities and became essential practice in the control of the food quality. For this, modern analytical techniques have been used in the identifi cation and quantifi cation of these compounds in different matrices. Considering the pyrethroids are the most used insecticide in the world this review focus the main aspects and advantages of the use of pyrethroids in the general control of insects, the risks of nontarget organisms exposition and the determination of pyrethroids residues on different samples
